Sam West's life is on the rocks. Should be easy enough - or it would be, if it weren't for Harrison Yates, one of the club's clients. Almost from the moment Sam lays eyes on him, she is hit with a tsunami-sized wave of desire that turns her knees to jelly and makes her want to chuck the rule book right out the window.
That's how A Little Too Hot starts, and for the first 26% of it, it seems like just another new adult romance, the kind we've all read before. Girl meets guy, both feel an immediate attraction, and the only question is, how long will it take them to work through their issues and get together? And to a degree, that is what the book is about, but it is so much more than that! There is a huge, jaw-dropping, knock-you-for-loop surprise 27% of the way in, and it changes the entire tone and feel of the story, in the most brilliant and best of ways. Once I got over the initial shock, I was positively giddy with delight. I love it when an author yanks the rug out from under me and takes the book in a direction I didn't expect it to go.
The story is told entirely from Sam's POV. Most of you will remember her from book 1 in the series, which I recommend you read before you start this one. It's not required - A Little Too Hot works just fine as a stand alone - but for me, the extra background and history helped.
But I digress. We were talking about Sam, right? What I liked most about her was what an Everygirl she was. Aside from the dancing (which I am terrible at and would never be brave enough to do in front of an audience) I had no trouble slipping into her character's shoes. Whether she was happy, snippy, sad, scared, introspective, or what-have-you, all of her reactions were genuine and believable. I felt like her character really evolved, too, growing here and changing there until she became the best version of herself. I loved that. And the way she handled the tough situation she was thrown into? You go, girl!
Of course, this wouldn't be much of a romance without a hero to die for, and Harrison fits that bill to a tee. Forget how sexy and jaw-droppingly handsome he is. We're discriminating readers; we want more than just a pretty face, don't we? Of course we do! Lucky for us, Harrison has plenty of hero-worthy qualities to choose from. He's intelligent, motivated, passionate, honorable, astute, dedicated, aaand he is shrouded in secrets and mystery. If all that doesn't make you swoon, well, you need to get your swoon-o-meter checked, because it's clearly broken, LOL. The best thing about him, though, is his ability to embrace Sam for who she is, and yet challenge her at the same time. Instead of trying to change or control her, he listens, asks questions, and makes her think. That, more than anything else, won me over. I was goo, my friends. Absolutely goo.
About the romance itself. The book's title may be "A Little Too Hot", but trust me, there is nothing little about the hotness factor. This story seethes with sexual tension. Looks are long, silences are heavy with words unsaid, and every small, seemingly casual touch is electric. It felt like with every scene, the anticipation built a little more....and then a little more.....and then more still. It was excruciating, and I loved every second of it.
The suspenseful aspects of the book were really well done, and so was the foreshadowing. My only real complaint with the book was its ending. Things wrapped up a little too fast and neat for me. It was still satisfying, though, and in the grand scheme of things, does it really matter if the final pages feel a bit rushed when you've enjoyed the heck out of everything that came before it? Probably not.
A Little Too Hot was a great read with surprising thrills and a romance that completely swept me off my feet. I'll definitely be reading it again.
